San Francisco Community Fishing Association

Established in 2010, the SFCFA is the first community fishing association on the West Coast. Its members are the fishermen whose family-owned boats call San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf home. Using sustainable fishing practices, SFCFA members harvest many different species, including Dungeness crab, salmon, herring, tuna, and black cod. They offload their boats and sell their catch to a wide range of customers: wholesale fish processors, restaurants, grocery stores, and fish cooperatives. In the near future, the SFCFA plans to operate a retail store at Fisherman's Wharf to sell its members' catch directly to Bay Area consumers. Constantly involved in working to protect fisheries to keep them sustainable, SFCFA members promote such initiatives as crab-trap limits, the return to hook-and-line fishing for rock cod, and ensuring fresh-water resources for spawning salmon.
